Manchester’s Hidden Light

Infrared photography captures the light that the naked eye cannot see. This is done by using converted cameras, IR filters or film In conjunction with specialist editing techniques. This helps you reproduce the effects of an otherwise invisible light spectrum with your photographs. This is my project - Manchesters hidden light. Please note that this is on going so new pictures will be added for time to time.

Castlefield

Castlefield Parking Boats - Foliage appears white and water darkens. Castlefield is a fantastic area for IR photography.

Old Town Hall

Manchester’s original Town Hall, moved to Heaton Park in 1912 from King Street.

We can see wavelengths from about 400nm–700nm -from purple to red. Infrared light exists in the wavelengths from 700nm. After trying filters that attach to the lens with varying degrees of disappointment I decided to try a converted camera. An infrared converted camera is specially designed to capture images in the infrared spectrum, revealing unique details that are invisible to the naked eye. My camera was converted to 720nm.

Castlefield Still Boats

Using a editing process called ‘channel swapping” the foliage turns pink.
